Winter Warmth Drive: A Heartwarming Success!

March 22 – April 12, 2025
In partnership with St. Patrick Center

This spring, our community came together to bring warmth and comfort to individuals facing homelessness in the St. Louis area. Through our Winter Warmth Drive, we collected and donated over 200 essential winter items, including:

  • Winter coats
  • Gloves
  • Hats
  • Blankets

Thanks to your generosity, we filled 12–15 large bags with high-quality items for kids, youth, adults, and seniors. These donations were delivered to St. Patrick Center, a leading nonprofit serving the homeless population in the region.

Community-Powered Giving
The drive was a collaboration between Gujarati Samaj of St. Louis and community members across five area locations:

  • Belleville, IL
  • O’Fallon, MO
  • St. Charles, MO
  • Creve Coeur, MO
  • Fenton, MO

Local volunteers and partners organized the collections and helped transport the donations to St. Patrick Center at 800 N. Tucker Blvd., where they were received with gratitude by the center’s staff.

A Special Thanks
We are deeply grateful to everyone who participated—whether you donated a coat, helped spread the word, or volunteered your time. Your efforts brought warmth to those who need it most and showcased the true spirit of community.

Healthcare Services and Screenings

One of the major highlights of the Health Fair was the wide range of medical screenings, consultations, and preventive healthcare services available to attendees in one convenient location.

Preventive Health Screenings

The event offered screenings designed to help individuals better understand their overall health and identify potential health concerns:

  • Diabetes screening and specialist consultation: Information about diabetes prevention, blood sugar management, and healthy lifestyle practices.
  • Blood tests and cholesterol screening: Limited blood testing, including A1C and lipid panel screenings, to help assess important health indicators.
  • Blood pressure and cardiovascular health: Cardiology-related services, including EKG evaluations.
  • Bone density screening: An opportunity to assess bone health and learn about osteoporosis.
  • Vision checks: Basic vision assessments to encourage eye health awareness.
  • Height, weight, and BMI measurements: Basic measurements to help attendees better understand their physical health.
Specialized Medical Consultations

Community members had access to healthcare professionals representing multiple specialties:

  • Primary Care
  • Diabetes Care
  • Kidney Health
  • Cardiology
  • Urology
  • Pain Management
  • Nutrition and Diet

These services encouraged preventive care, increased awareness of common medical conditions, and helped individuals make informed decisions about their health.

Free Mammogram Services

An important feature of the Health Fair was the availability of free mammogram screenings, promoting breast health awareness and the importance of early detection. Advance registration was required, and appointments were subject to limited availability.

Free Flu Vaccinations

Free flu shots were offered as part of the event's preventive healthcare initiatives. This service encouraged seasonal flu protection and raised awareness about the importance of vaccinations, particularly for vulnerable populations. Vaccines were available in limited quantities, and applicable restrictions applied.

Community Blood Donation Drive

The Health Fair also featured a blood donation opportunity supported by ImpactLife Blood Center. Blood donation helps maintain a reliable blood supply for hospitals and patients in need. By including a blood donation drive, the event encouraged community members to participate in an activity that can help save lives and support the broader healthcare system.

Healthcare Partners

The event flyer recognized the following healthcare partners:

  • SSM Health
  • Mercy
  • ImpactLife Blood Center
  • Walmart Pharmacy

Their involvement helped bring a diverse range of healthcare services and resources together under one roof. This collaboration demonstrates the value of partnerships between community organizations and healthcare providers in promoting accessible healthcare and community wellness.

Preventive Care and Community Service

The GSSTL Health Fair was more than a gathering of healthcare professionals. It brought individuals, families, medical providers, and volunteers together with a shared focus on healthier living.

By offering multiple healthcare services at no cost, the event sought to reduce barriers to preventive care, including financial concerns, limited awareness, and the inconvenience of visiting multiple healthcare facilities. It emphasized the importance of:

  • Regular health checkups and preventive screenings.
  • Early identification of potential health concerns.
  • Education about chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease.
  • Maintaining healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle.
  • Community participation through blood donation.
  • Building stronger relationships between residents and local healthcare providers.
Community Service and Volunteer Support

Organizing a community Health Fair requires coordination, planning, communication, and support from many individuals. GSSTL recognizes the dedication of its organizing committee, volunteers, healthcare professionals, participating organizations, and community supporters who contributed their time and effort.

Their involvement reflects the spirit of Seva (selfless service) and the importance of giving back to the community. Through initiatives like the Free Health Fair, GSSTL continues to expand its role beyond cultural and social activities by supporting programs that contribute to the health and well-being of the broader community.

Appreciation

The Gujarati Samaj of St. Louis extends sincere gratitude to SSM Health, Mercy, ImpactLife Blood Center, Walmart Pharmacy, participating medical professionals, volunteers, and everyone who supported the Health Fair. We also thank the individuals and families who participated and demonstrated their commitment to maintaining good health.

Looking Ahead

GSSTL remains committed to meaningful community programs that promote health, education, cultural awareness, and social well-being. Through continued collaboration with healthcare organizations, volunteers, and community leaders, GSSTL hopes to create more opportunities for healthier lifestyles, preventive care, and stronger community connections.

Food Donation Drive

On June 13th, Gujarati Samaj of St. Louis collected over 1000 food cans, during the Open House of our GSSTL CENTER, benefiting Team Food Pantry in Hazelwood.

"On behalf of TEAMs volunteers, clients and the board we wish to say thank you to, the GSSTL CENTER, a non-profit organization (Gujarati Samaj of St. Louis). As president of the board I wish to thank ou for choosing our North County community and thank you for what you have done for TEAM." Mark Behlmann.

Making Masks

Given potential shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) we worked with community partners and volunteers to sew masks for the local healthcare organizations and for general use. Fabric masks offered the benefit of being able to be washed and re-used. This was a perfect opportunity to make a crucial difference from home!

We are very proud of the difference our members made to the community, at large, during this trying times. Some donated supplies and materials like fabric & elastic, others volunteering to pick and drop-off materials and masks, still several others using their sewing skills to make the masks. These masks were distributed to local health organizations like Barnes & Jewish Hospital, SSM Healthcare and others.

It was truly an inspiring event with scores of members showing their dedication to the cause.

Blood Donation Drives

Blood donation is important because maintaining an adequate blood supply in our community secures blood transfusions for patients. And IT SAVES LIVES. The Gujarati Samaj of St. Louis organizes regular blood donation drives in tandem with local blood banks like Mississippi Regional Blood Center, America Red Cross and others.

Dozens of member volunteers traveled to Moore, Oklahoma to help the tornado ravaged communities with the storm recovery and cleanup.
